The annual ritual of opening ceremonies to inaugurate the Dixie Youth baseball season was held Saturday at Civitan Park.
The noon ceremony featured N.C. Senator Michael Walters and myself offering comments, after which the senator threw out the first pitch.
The Fairmont Civitans sponsor this organization which provides boys and girls of various ages the opportunity to play competitive baseball for several months in the spring and early summer.
Dozens of teams are fielded with more than a hundred kids playing.

Monday’s Chamber of Commerce meeting will be held at Fairmont Golf Club and will provide members an opportunity to socialize and conduct business in the beautiful surroundings of the course which has been revamped during the past year. The chamber encourages residents and businesses to join.
A very popular upcoming event which the chamber will host is the Beach Blast. This event held last year at the golf course drew 600 to enjoy the beach music of a live band and great food. This year’s event is set for May 20.

The first meeting of the re-organized Community Watch is Thursday at 7 p.m. in the courtroom. New president David Rich and Vice President Kim Ivey are planning new membership methods and more useful programs. Chief Danny Parker will have all of his police officers and dispatchers at Thursday’s meeting for introductions. The officers of Community Watch encourage all citizens to join and help improve this very important organization.

One of the most talked about and entertaining events in town will be held on Saturday evening in the Heritage Center.
For the past few years Farmers Festival Pageant organizer Angie Lovin and that year’s queens sponsor a spaghetti meal followed by a womanless pageant. The meal starts at 6 p.m. followed by the pageant at 7 p.m. It’s a no holds barred event with the contestants vying for a coveted crown and bragging rights.
The proceeds go to Relay for Life. Set aside time in your schedule for a great meal and an hilarious evening.
