Ready to serve
Volunteers wait to serve food during the inaugural Pembroke Empty Bowls fundraiser, which raised more than $600 for the Dig It! Pembroke Community Garden. Soups were made by students in the Culinary Arts department at Robeson Community College, and volunteers baked desserts. Each attendee took home a handmade bowl as a reminder that some people in Robeson County go hungry.

Design winner
James A. Jones, a student at Lumberton High School, created the winning red dress design for the fourth annual Take it to Heart! Red Dress Luncheon and Fashion Show. The event was held last weekend at Lumberton High School and featured a panel discussion about heart disease by former heart patients. Ny’Ree Watson of Fairmont High School won second place in the contest. Watson took first place last year.
