County gets LREMC’s zoning request

LUMBERTON — The Robeson County Board of Commissioners has several public hearings on the agenda when it meets tonight.

The commissioners usually hold the first of their two regular monthly meetings on the first Monday of the month, but because Monday was Labor Day the meeting was postponed until today.

Five of the six hearings are for conditional-use permit requests. The other is for a requested zoning change.

The zoning change is being sought by the Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation for a 45-acre tract along N.C. 711 across from COMtech business park so that its long-awaited new headquarters can be constructed. The request is to change the property’s zone from Residential Agricultural to Heavy Industrial.

The utility company is moving from its corporate home in Red Springs. Cost of constructing the new facility is $23 million.

Two of the conditional-use permit requests will allow for auto repairs. One will allow for a used car dealership.

Randy Dwayne Ransom wants to establish an auto and diesel repair shop on a single acre in a Residential Agricultural district in Burnt Swamp. Perry Hardin wants to establish a used car dealership, mechanic shop and office on a 7.99-acre tract in a Residential Agricultural District of Saddletree.

In Lumberton, Jimmie Lynn Stone wants his conditional-use permit to establish a beauty salon on a .46-acre tract in a Residential Agricultural District.

The final two conditional-use permits would allow for the placement of a third dwelling on separate properties in Back Swamp and Alfordsville. Brenda Davis wants to place her third dwelling on a 1.71-acre tract in a Residential Agricultural District in Back Swamp, while Tonya Locklear Goins wants to place her third dwelling on a 3.55-acre tract in a Residential Agricultural District of Alfordsville.

The board on Tuesday will also consider awarding a $128,640 contract to Cornerstone Construction for renovations to be made to the county’s Emergency 911 Center. Cornerstone, the lowest of two bids, is being recommended to handle the project by Anderson Engineering & Associates of Lumberton.

In other business, the meeting agenda calls for the commissioners to:

— Hear a presentation from Twilla Allen, Area Agency on Aging Program administrator for the Lumber River Council of Governments, on 2017 Home & Community Care Block Grant funds the county will receive.

— Consider several tax-related issues, including approval of a foreclosure list, and action on the tax collector’s request to remove taxes that have been on the books for 10 years that remain uncollected.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the commissioners room of the county administration building on North Elm Street.
