Incumbent Steve Sampson, of Pembroke, is seeking his second consecutive three-year term representing Burnt Swamp.
“I am seeking re-election to continue to serve my district and the Lumbee Tribe as a whole,” Sampson said. “There are numerous ongoing projects — including federal recognition, health and human services initiatives, and future housing programs — that I intend to be an advocate for.”
Sampson, 41, has been employed the past seven years with the Lumbee River Membership Corporation. He attends Union Chapel Baptist Church.
During his three years as a council member, Sampson has served as chairman of the council’s Health and Human Services Committee. He is currently vice chairman of the council’s Finance Committee, and also serves as chairman of the Lumbee Nation’s Tribal Program.
Sampson is married to Kimberly Rayas Sampson. He has three children, Jonah, Jenna and Jacob.
The candidate filing period for the election runs through Sept. 10. Candidates can file at the Tribal Housing Complex weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The filing fee is $150.
