A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Great Marsh Baptist Church Cemetery in St. Pauls.
Matt was a graduate of the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing. He worked as a pediatric ICU nurse at Cornell University for the past three years. He was to begin his post graduate studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in September.
Matt was a fitness enthusiast and participated in many endurance competitions. His interests included bicycling, running, swimming, traveling, and sports adventures.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Debbie Fields of St. Pauls; a sister, Amy and her children, Caleb, Landon, and Maya, all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dohn and Crystal Fields and their son, Alex, all of Stedman, N.C.; and friends, colleagues, and acquaintances.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at St. Pauls Funeral Home.
