PEMBROKE — Two incumbent Lumbee Tribal Council members on Monday filed for re-election.

Larry Anthony Chavis, District 6, and Fernie Lambert, District 12, are each running in the Nov. 9 election for their second consecutive three-year term on the 21-member council. Under tribal law, a council member can only serve two consecutive terms.

“I am a strong advocate for housing among the disabled and elderly,’’ said Chavis, whose district encompasses Raft Swamp and North Pembroke. “I have been steadfast in our efforts to gain federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe. I have served District 6 with great honesty and integrity.”

Chavis, 42, has been employed with Pepsi Bottling Ventures for the past 24 years. He attends Tabernacle Baptist Church in Pembroke.

He is married to Gwendolyn L. Chavis and has two sons and two daughters.

Lambert, of Maxton, the tribe’s vice chairman since being elected to the council three years ago, said he wants to continue working to better the lives of all tribe members.

“My goal is to pursue federal recognition and to provide support for our elders, veterans and boys and girls clubs,” said Lambert, whose district includes Scotland County, Maxton and Alfordsville. “I also support the services that are available to all other members of the Lumbee Tribe.”

Lambert, 68, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a master gunnery sergeant in 1989. He is a member of VFW Post 2843, Pembroke; American Legion Post 117, Maxton; and the Pembroke Kiwanis Club. He also serves on the 13-member national Advisory Committee on Minority Veterans, and is the head warrior of the Lumbee Warriors Association.

Lambert and his wife Elaine have two sons, Eric and John, and two granddaughters.

Lee Albert Barefoot of Maxton has also filed for the District 12 seat.

The candidate filing period for the Nov. 9 election continues through Sept. 10.
