ST. PAULS — St. Pauls volleyball coach Jennifer White has been waiting all season to have her full roster. Now that she has it, White believes her Bulldogs are set for big things.
St. Pauls rolled to a 3-0 sweep of West Bladen Monday afternoon behind seven kills by Zukia Davis.
“It feels pretty good to have the entire team out there,” White said. “We made some changes, I took a middle hitter and moved her to the outside. It feels really good to have everybody together.”
Unlike the teams’ last meeting on Thursday, which the Bulldogs won in five games, St. Pauls (3-2) was never seriously challenged. The Bulldogs won 25-15, 25-12 and 25-17.
West Bladen coach Megan Strickland said her team didn’t “play to our potential.” She added her team had other problems during the contest.
“We had some attitude problems,” Strickland said. “We also had two sophomores that sat out because they can only play three out of the four games this week. They will dress for our conference match Thursday.”
White understands the problems Strickland and her Knights are going through. White said she held an impromptu team meeting following Thursday’s win.
“We met for like 30 minutes on the team bus after we got back,” White said. “We talked about what a team means and talked about changing some of the attitudes.
“Since that meeting, we have been a totally different team at Friday’s practice and today’s game.”
St. Pauls will return to the court today at East Bladen and try to avenge a season-opening loss.
Bulldogs coast in win
ST. PAULS — Dillon Yanosik scored four goals and added three assists to help St. Pauls to a 16-0 win over Purnell Swett Monday night at G.S. Kinlaw Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-0) jumped out to an early lead on Juanito Segura's goal in the sixth minute.
Segura assisted on Yony Munoz-Nava first goal of the game two minutes later. St. Pauls built up an 11-0 halftime advantage against the Rams.
"The score doesn't really represent the talent Purnell Swett's team has," St. Pauls coach Brent Martin said. "Those guys are natural athletes and within the next few months or maybe even next year, their team is definitely going to be a formidable team."
St. Pauls returns to action Wednesday at West Columbus in a Three Rivers Conference clash.
Hoke knocks off Devils
RED SPRINGS — Hoke scored three goals in the first half to pull away for a 4-2 victory Monday night.
Raul Dominguez and Nicholas Avila scored for the Red Devils (1-3-1). Julio Bello added an assist.
