LUMBERTON — Although they took their time doing it, the Lumberton volleyball team got back in the win column Monday.

The Pirates defeated the Cape Fear Colts in thrilling fashion, coming back from being down two games to win 3-2.

Game one was close from the beginning. The Pirates (2-4) went back and forth with the Colts, never falling more than three points behind in the latter stages. However, Lumberton eventually fell in game one 25-22.

Cape Fear looked like it would roll to a victory in game two, jumping out to an early lead. The Pirates rallied, going on a six-point run before losing the game 25-17.

Down 2-0 and facing a loss, the Pirates looked like a different team in game three after a stern pep talk from coach Brandi Andrews.

Lumberton started game three with a bang, taking a 13-8 lead and didn't look back. Holly Brisson, who led the team with four kills and an ace, contributed to 25-16 win in game three with stong serving and net play.

Andrews said the difference in teamwork between games was noticable.

"We communicated a lot better," Andrews said. "We moved our feet too. In the first two games, we looked like we were stuck in one place. Hopefully, this win will get us rolling."

Lumberton kept the momentum going in game four, willing itself to a 25-17 win to force a deciding game. Although the largest lead in the game was only six points, the Pirates never trailed in the final game completing the comeback with a 15-10 win.

Cape Fear coach Alan McNaughton thought his team was in good position up 2-0.

"They played well up until game three," McNaughton said. "We got some subs in there in game three and it went down hill. After that, they couldn't put that game behind them."

McNaughton said his team tried to come back in game five, but couldn't overcome small errors in the loss.

"They played hard in game five and it was close," McNaugton said. "But it was too little too late."
