The family has requested private time to grieve and will plan a service for a later date.
He was born April 1, 1941, in Lumberton, to the late Burnes L. Ivey and Mary K. Ivey Corbitt.
Burnie was a warm-hearted person and never met a stranger. He participated in his sons’ activities when they were young being a Scout leader and little league football coach. Years later when walking down the street he would hear “Hey Coach,” and it would be one of the boys who were on the football team.
He graduated from Lumberton High School and attended ECU and Troy State College in Troy, Ala., where he met his wife, Judy. Burnie worked years in construction and retired from the City of Durham as a building inspector.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Todd Ivey.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Judy D. Ivey; a son, Mark T. Ivey and wife Jami; a daughter-in-law, Carla Young; grandchildren, Amy, Ashley, Lorianne, Emily, Abby, and Tucker; and great-grandchildren, Lazarus, Alan, and Bethany.
