LUMBERTON — The state Department of Transportation will hold two informal public meeting this week for residents to discuss improvements that need to be made along Interstate 95.

The Monday meeting is at Robeson Community College’s Workforce Development Center and on Tuesday it will be at the Holiday Inn. Each is from 4 to 7 p.m.

Kristine O’Connor, project planning engineer, said that the meetings will run like a workshop with project boards and interactive maps. She said residents can make suggestions, identify problem areas, and ask questions of Department of Transportation staff.

“(It’s) to let people know what we’re doing and get their input,” O’Connor said. “We not only need input from engineers in Raleigh, but from those who travel there regularly ... to hear their voice.”

The public meetings were part of a series of meetings the Department of Transportation has held throughout the month of August. O’Connor said the meetings have been held in seven out of the eight counties in the state that I-95 runs through.

“This is not a formal presentation,” O’Connor said. “You can see what we’re doing and have questions answered ... We’re looking at current conditions, what improvements need to be made, and how to pay for it.”

She said after the public meetings, staff will review public comments and make comprehensive recommendations of what improvements need to be made along I-95.

“Right now we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong,” O’Connor said.
