Friday's roundup: Chavis saves Rams at Scotland

LAURINBURG — Trailing by one with 4.9 seconds left, Purnell Swett’s James Chavis buried a 3-pointer to give the Rams a 49-47 road victory over Scotland County in a Southeastern Conference boys basketball game Friday in Laurinburg.

The Rams rallied from 12 points down in the second half to put Chavis in position for the game-winning 3. Swett (12-6, 3-3) held Scotland (3-10, 0-4) to just four fourth-quarter points.

Swett’s Chavis and Juwan Jones finished with 14 and 15 points, respectively. Mitchell Hill chipped in nine points.

Lady Rams fall short

Despite 25- and 22-point outings from Laura Bird and Kayla Lewis, the Purnell Swett girls basketball team was edged by the SEC-leading Lady Scots, 55-53, Friday night.

Late-game free throw shooting plagued the Rams (9-8, 2-4) down the stretch.

Bird finished with a double-double, adding 13 rebounds to her credit. Lewis had five boards and four assists.

Scotland (13-5, 6-0) was led by Ariel Ratcliff’s 17 points.

Pirates take down Pinecrest

SOUTHERN PINES — The Lumberton boys basketball team improved to 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference with a 53-44 road win over Pinecrest Friday night in Southern Pines.
