PEMBROKE — For those who have to sing along, the Givens Performing Arts Center is the place to be on Feb. 4.
The “Sing-Along The Sound of Music” will be held at 7 p.m. at the center, during which attendees are invited to sing along with a showing of the classic Julie Andrews film in full-screen Technicolor.
“It is basically a huge ‘Sound of Music’ karaoke family night event so it will be a great show for the whole family,” said Tasha Oxendine, the marketing director for GPAC. “It is going to be fun. Participants will receive a fun bag prior to the show which contain items associated with the movie, such as edelweiss, curtain swatches and party poppers.”
Tickets are $15, $10 for children and students, $5 for UNCP students and $15 for faculty and staff. A family four-pack is $40.
The 1965 movie stars Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and Eleanor Parker. Andrews plays a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the children of a Naval officer widower.
Popular songs from the movie include “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “Do-Re-Mi.”
A costume contest will be held for those who arrive wearing get-ups from the movie.
“Some past event participants have dressed as drops of golden sun, nuns and even jars of jam,” Oxendine said.
There have been times, once in Oxford and once in London, that real nuns have won the fancy dress competition. Judging by the audience will take place before the show.
The show began in the United Kingdom in 1999, and has been performed more than 10,000 times in nine countries. Elton John had a special showing of the Sing-A-Long for his birthday.
This is the first time the show has come to GPAC.
