LUMBERTON — A Lumberton man was charged on Monday with setting fire to two vehicles in a mobile home park, according to the Sheriff’s Office, and a second city man faces attempted arson charges in an unrelated case.

Brian Terrel Campbell, 23, of U.S. 74 in Lumberton, is accused of two counts of breaking and entering, two counts of felony burning of personal property and twice failing to appear on unrelated traffic violations, according to sheriff’s Lt. Brian Duckworth.

Campbell was placed in the Robeson County jail under $22,000 bond.

Duckworth said that on Jan. 17 at about 3:25 a.m., Campbell set fire to a car and truck belonging to Lawrence Hardin, who owns the 74 Mobile Home Park. He used a bag to set fire to the car, and a towel to set fire to the truck, Duckworth said.

The car and truck, which were each valued between $2,500 and $3,000, were destroyed, Duckworth said. Hardin also told investigators he had $1,000 cash in the truck.

The truck was parked just a few feet from the mobile home that Hardin’s daughter, her boyfriend and her two children were inside, Duckworth said.

Duckworth said Campbell is a former resident of the mobile home park.

“The park owner had told him previously to stay out of the park,” he said.

According to the N.C. Department of Correction, Campbell was on probation for breaking into an elderly couple’s home in Lumberton in 2008 and stealing a car. Campbell will make his first appearance today.

In the unrelated incident, which occurred Monday, Larry Wayne Strickland, 21, of 4858 Oakgrove Church Road, is charged with attempted first-degree arson after he poured gasoline around a home and set fire to it just after noon, Duckworth said. The home at 91 Denim Road belongs to Helen Locklear.

“His pour pattern didn’t connect and it burned one little spot where he lit it and it went out,” Duckworth said. “The humidity was really high yesterday, so that helped.”

Locklear and her teenage daughter were home at the time.

“She was accusing him of stealing some medication,” Duckworth said. “He denied doing that and ultimately got mad with her and poured the gas.”

Strickland was placed in the Robeson County jail under $10,000 bond for the arson charges, Duckworth said. The Sheriff’s Office also had warrants on him for other crimes, including possession of marijuana, communicating threats, second-degree trespassing and injury to real property, which added $3,000 to Strickland’s bond.

Strickland also is wanted in Columbus County, according to Duckworth.

Listen, PUKES: Before you strike that match or flick your Bic, look over your shoulder. Because that's where Ducky Duckworth's going to be. Greatest lawman in Robeson County since the REAL indians were run out.
